Thoughts to finish up the work-day because I’d rather not write something serious (or link to something serious):
1. My sister turned 14 yesterday.
2. Best breakfast recipe is avocado, tomato and goat cheese on whole grain bread. Serve with hot tea served a la Ruge.
3. Never buy anything but Brown’s cheese at Nakumatt supermarkets. The rest are rancid. Including the ones in the fancy glass box they cut for you and make look delicious.
4. I found President’s Choice cheese at Nakumatt (it was rancid). But Canadians know what I mean.
5. Many Kenyans have two phones. One is a pre-paid line, the other a post-paid line. So when you run out on one or have not paid your bills on the other. Two cell-phone juggling act is very common.
6. The newspaper stands are very practical in Nairobi. Get the number of a guy and he’ll run down to your door and drop it off. Or into your moving car.
7. Downtown Internet connection in my office is so fast I can download whole movies (the IT guys don’t know yet – hopefully they won’t read this blog post before March).
8. In Damascus, apparently, people promise to do all kinds of things for you (hospitality gesture). And, a surprise to me, they often follow through, but it is “always odd and over the top.” This is from my brother living in the Palestinian Camp.
9. Water bottles sometimes avoid printing the number of liters inside them. Or I am blind.
10. Running shoes are a hot commodity to take and sell, but not expensive leather jackets.
11. You would rather take a taxi then get an ambulance both in Nairobi AND in Bari, Italy.
12. Most cafes will not let you leave with a glass bottle. Today, they blamed it on the Coca-Cola company. Personally, I would blame a lot on Coca-Cola.
